Barn Cats | Poetry | Illinois Times

Dear Sibs, I expect reimbursement

by Dad for most things,

but here’s one bill he shouldn’t see.

The barn cats wane and wax,

depending on the number of kittens.

We got rid of some

by taking them to a nearby farm.

The mother cat, preferring the pickings

here, came home over the field.

They live in Dad’s car,

the Chevy Classic Capri Hotel.

The front seat is bedroom,

the back seat toilet. They also

have a dining room,

a dead mouse on the passenger seat.

They’d pissed all over a bunch

of valuable papers in MY car;

You should have smelt

the school copy machine!

The kittens grow up maimed.

Limpy has 3 legs,

Stumpy has half a tail.

We plead with Gramp

to get the cats neutered.

But he says they should be

“allowed their reproductive rights.”

All these barn cats are totally wild.

I had to trick them for days before

I could catch the two I took to the vet.

They charged for their keep.

I’m enclosing the bill; can we split it?
