The place to be this weekend is downtown for Springfield’s popular, annual Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity. This hilarious downtown spectacle, born in 2008, just keeps getting better, donating more than $2 million to area charities. The event begins Friday with the Craft Beer and Cigar Festival featuring food, drinks and music by Sushi Roll and Lick Creek. The 5K race begins at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sixth and Adams streets with a route dotted with beer, corndog, doughnut and ice cream stops for runners and spectators alike. Runners are encouraged to wear costumes for the race, which is not timed. Wednesday was the last day to sign up for the race, unfortunately, but even watching it take place will be enjoyable. Plus, the race will be followed by a street party at Seventh and Washington streets featuring live music by Captain Geech and the Shrimp Shack Shooters at noon.
