Three days of events commemorate 1908 Springfield Race Riot | IT Picks

The city of Springfield will honor the legacy of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot with a three-day observance next week at various locations. The event will feature presentations, walking tours, a film screening and ceremonies as city residents “reflect, reclaim and remember history.” The first day, Thursday, Aug. 14, begins at 9:30 a m. with the 1908 Race Riot Walking Tour starting at the Old State Capitol followed by a noon presentation by Doris Bailey at the state museum titled “Blood in Their Eyes and Hate in Their Hearts: The Springfield 1908 Race Riot.” An opening reception will follow at 5 p.m. at the city library. The event, which requires registration at bit.ly/3hotdays, will feature remarks from Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher and Austin Randolph, president of the Springfield NAACP. A screening of the film Springfield Had No Shame will follow as well as presentations by Dr. Brian Mitchell and Anne Moseley. At 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15, Floyd Mansberger and Chris Collins will give presentations at the Lincoln Home. At 7:45 p.m. that day, a remembrance ceremony is planned at 400 N. Ninth St., the site of the planned Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument. Dr. Brian Mitchell, Quinn P. Gilly and Chris Collins will provide remarks. On Saturday, Aug. 16, Ken Page, president of the Springfield chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, will give a presentation at the Springfield and Central Illinois African American History Museum. A closing reception will follow from 3 to 5 p.m.
