Rhythm of Reverie plays at Weebles this Thursday night.
Welcome to the merry month of May as we continue our raucous romp through the music scene of our fair city, to see what can be seen out there. And by the look of our listings, there’s plenty to partake in, so let’s get right on it, if we may.
Thursday gives us a few new gigs as we hit the May mark of more outdoor performances. The Railyard on South Sixth begins its extensive season with Silas Tockey while Casey’s Pub has Rod Grant on the patio to start an every other Thursday lineup. Weebles celebrates its 10th anniversary with Rhythm of Reverie and Mother Road Diner serves up Robert Sampson, while the Curve Inn brings us Best of Springfield favs JackAsh.
Friday clocks in with a cool 29 listed shows, including a whole bunch of regulars like Johnnie Owens & Silk at Buzz Bomb, Mandy Rose at Pease’s at BUNN Gourmet and Smokestacks at George Rank’s, along with some not so regular such as Preston Searl at Jamie’s Route 66, Ty Brando at Harvest Market and The South Side Johnny Band at the Curve.
If you feel like heading east, Decatur has a nice lineup of folks making music including violinist Polly Launay at Golden Fox Brewing, Corey Wise at Sliderz, TULO + EADS at the 48 Inn Sports Bar & Grill and West End Boogie Project at VFW Post 99.
Maybe you’d like to start your busy Saturday at 10 a.m. when Stella Coffee & Tea gives us the amazing David Tell on his various Native American flutes. Then, we have a couple of all-day events for you with The Railyard going big for their grand opening featuring The Dandelion Pickers (12-1:30 p.m.) and Folsom Prison Five (6-8 p.m.) as the musical entertainment, while El Arriero hosts its second annual Cinco de Mayo Parking Lot Party (1-11 p.m.) with Divina, Ricarda Rosalina, After School Special and also Folsom Prison Five. For some original music in your face, Pimpin’ Henry covers The Blue Grouch, while the downtown Dumb Records goes wild with Hospital Job, Feral Vices, The Petals and Sonic Sunday.
You could also motor west on Saturday to near New Berlin where it’s time for the annual Nickipalooza fundraiser for the Hoogland Center for the Arts, presented by Nicole Florence at Danenberger Family Vineyards, with music by Down State and Sunshine Daydream. Or you may want to head on a little farther west and visit Jacksonville for the annual Blues & Brews Festival on the Central Square Plaza (12-4 p.m.), then hang around for the nationally known cool country guy, Ward Davis, at Twisted Tree Music Hall (7-10 p.m.). Then there’s some more cool country when Charley Crockett cruises into the Sangamon Auditorium for a big-time concert, one of the last ones before the venue closes for 15 months to make repairs.
Sunday comes a-calling with a rousing “May the 4th be with you” along with several fine Funday performances going on. In the “towns around town” department, Robert Sampson makes the drive to Hill Prairie Winery near Oakford, while Devin C. Williams takes the jaunt to Whiskey Ridge Saloon in Breckenridge and Ricarda Rosalina scoots out to Trail’s End in Curran.
Within the city limits, we have a party going on at the Stadium with Square of the Roots and The Red Ribbon Revue, Thomas J Beverly presenting at It’s All About Wine, the Brewhaus Pub Jambalaya Jazz Jam happening and those fabulous Harris Brothers cleaning up at Mother Road Diner.
That just may be all we have for now for May.
